Isaak Jogues SJ (born January 10, 1607 in Orléans , † October 18, 1646 in Ossernenon, today Auriesville , New York ) was a French priest and missionary . He is venerated as a saint and martyr in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

In October 1624 Jogues entered the novitiate of the Jesuits in Rouen. He was sent to Canada as an Indian missionary in 1636 and worked in what is now the province of Québec as a missionary among the Wyandot on Lake Huron in mission stations founded by Jean de Brébeuf . In 1642 he was captured and ill-treated by the Iroquois , but he was able to convert and baptize some of them . After he had managed to escape with the help of the Calvinist commander of Nieuw Amsterdam , Arent van Corlaer (1619–1667), he returned to France. On January 5, 1644, he reached the Jesuit settlement in Rennes.

In the spring of 1644 he traveled to Canada again to make peace between the French and the Mohawk . However, he was captured by the Mohawk and killed by them.

Aftermath

Isaak Jogues was canonized on June 29, 1930, along with his two companions as well as Jean de Brébeuf and four other missionaries of the Jesuit order . His feast day is October 19th. Isaac Jogues and his companions are considered the patron saints of North America.
