Isabelino Gradín (born July 8, 1897 in Montevideo , † December 21, 1944 ) was a Uruguayan football player and athlete .

Soccer

society

Striker Gradín, whose ancestors came from Africa and there probably from the Congo, Angola or the Mandinka people , belonged from 1915 to 1921 to the Montevidean club Peñarol, which competed in the Primera División . In 1918 and 1921 his team celebrated winning the Uruguayan championship.

In 1915, 1917 and 1921 the Aurinegros also had the upper hand at the Copa Albion , while for 1916 the triumph at the Copa Competencia and the Copa Competencia Internacional , the Copa La Transatlántica , the Copa Aniversario , the Copa Jockey Club and the Copa Club Uruguay are listed. In 1918 the trophy was won at the Copa de Honor , the Copa de Honor Internacional , the Copa Montevideo and the Copa Tortoni . In 1921, his club also secured victory at the Copa Baltasar Brum .

On a personal level, 101 goals scored for Gradín are led in 212 games played for the Aurinegros .

National team

Gradín was also a member of the Uruguayan senior team . Overall, he completed from his debut on July 18, 1915 to his last game for the Celeste on July 14, 1927 24 internationals. He scored ten goals.

Gradín took part with the national team in the South American Championships in 1916 , 1917 and 1919 . Uruguay won the title in 1916 and 1917. In 1919 his home country narrowly failed and finished second. When he participated for the first time, he completed all three matches and was the only top scorer of the tournament with three goals scored . While he was only left with the role of the unconsidered substitute player in the following year, he played four games at the event in 1919 and contributed two goals.

He also won the Copa Gran Premio de Honor Uruguayo in 1918 with the national team .

athletics

Parallel to his football career, Gradín was also active and successful as a track and field athlete. So he won a gold medal over 400 meters and the bronze over the 200-meter course at the Campeonato de Iniciación in 1918 . In the following year he secured two gold medals at the South American Athletics Championships over those same sprint distances and repeated this success at the South American Athletics Championships in 1920 , where Andrés Mazzali , another Uruguayan football player far from football, was successful. Gradín also added the title in the 4 x 400 meter relay to his success statistics that year. In the previous year, Uruguay had already won the silver medal with his participation. Also at the unofficial South American Championships, known as the Latin American Championships in 1922, he secured the gold medal over 400 meters.

Honors

In Montevideo, in the Ciudad Vieja , the Plaza Isabelino Gradín is a square named after him. There a commemorative stele was installed in his honor by the Intendencia Municipal of Montevideo (IMM) on the authorization of the Junta Departamental Montevideo.
