Isaiah Rider, Jr. (born March 12, 1971 in Oakland , California ), nicknamed JR , is a retired American basketball player . From 1993 to 2001 he played in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Career

Rider was selected fifth by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1993 NBA Draft . With the young Wolves he immediately advanced to the leading player with 16.6 points. He was voted into the NBA All-Rookie First Team . He also won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 1994. The next two seasons were statistically very good for riders. He led the Wolves as the most successful point collector.

In 1996 Rider switched to the Portland Trail Blazers , where he was also able to celebrate sporting success. He qualified for the playoffs every year with the Blazers. In 1999 he switched to the Atlanta Hawks , for whom he only played one year. In the summer of 2000, Rider then signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers . At the Lakers, he came mainly from the bank as a replacement for Kobe Bryant . With the Lakers, he also won his first NBA championship in 2001. His last NBA station was the Denver Nuggets , for which Rider only completed ten games before he was fired.

During his nine-year career, Rider averaged 16.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

Others

During and after his career, Rider often made negative headlines on and off the field. In 2007 he was sentenced to seven months in prison for drug abuse and violence against the police.
