Isaias glossatus (Bamberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Isaias glossatus (Latin: "Commented Isaiah") is an illuminated manuscript of the book Isaiah with the commentary of Hieronymus , which under the signature Bamberg, Staatsbibliothek, Msc. Bibl. 76 is kept in the Bamberg State Library . The manuscript was in the year 1000 in Reichenau scriptorium written and in the local reputed schools with two miniatures equipped. The manuscript was presumably donated by Heinrich II for the Bamberg Cathedral Library.

content

The manuscript contains Jerome's prologue to the book of the prophet Isaiah (fol. 1r – 2v), the list of chapters (fol. 2v – 6v) and the biblical text with the accompanying commentary by the Church Father , preceded by a separate prologue (fol. 7r– 10r, 11v-143r). The main text and some of the scattered Latin glosses come almost entirely from a single hand, which shows typical features of the Reichenau writing school. The Alemannic dialect of the 18 Old High German glosses registered at the same time also points to Reichenau.

Two (on fol. 10v / 11r) opposing miniatures with scenes from the calling vision of the prophet Isaiah lead on to the main text. They show Isaiah's vision of God (Is. 6,1–2) and - as an initial decorative page - the purification of the prophet (Is 6, 5).

Striking similarities in format, layout and decoration with a Reichenau manuscript commentary on the Song of Solomon and the Book of Daniel ( Bamberg State Library, Msc. Bibl. 22 , declared World Document Heritage in 2003 ) suggest that these two codices were conceived together . The main scribe is identical in both manuscripts. The miniatures are assigned to the early works of the so-called Liuthar group .

history

The manuscript commentary on the Book of Isaiah and the manuscript commentary on the Song of Solomon and the Book of Daniel belong, according to unanimous research opinion, to the book foundations of Heinrich II for Bamberg Cathedral. In 1611, both manuscripts were uniformly rebound , as was the parchment manuscript holdings in the Bamberg Cathedral Library between 1611 and 1614 . In the course of secularization in Bavaria in 1802/1803, they came to today's Bamberg State Library.
