Julius Isidor Rosenthal (born July 16, 1836 in Labischin , † January 2, 1915 in Erlangen ) was a German physiologist .

Rosenthal received his doctorate from the University of Berlin in 1859 , where he was a student of Emil Heinrich Du Bois-Reymond . He stayed in Berlin as an assistant at the Institute of Physiology, was habilitated in 1862 and in 1867 assistant professor. In 1872 he was appointed professor of physiology at the University of Erlangen .

His research areas were the physiology of breathing and thermoregulation in warm-blooded animals. He was the author of several articles in Ludimar Hermann's textbook on physiology . In 1881 he became editor of the journal Biologisches Zentralblatt .

In 1877 he received the citizenship of Erlangen on application . Politically, he was involved in the Progressive People's Party . Rosenthal campaigned for the construction of the Erlangen water supply network and played a key role in the construction of the slaughterhouse . In 1906 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Erlangen and in 1908 he was awarded the title of Royal Privy Councilor . In 1909 he received an honorary doctorate from the Erlangen faculty of philosophy. In 1913 he retired.

Rosenthal was buried in the city's central cemetery because he had left the Jewish religious community.

His son Werner Rosenthal (1870–1942) was a well-known pathologist, and his wife Anna was the chairwoman of the Women's Association of the Red Cross.
