Islamic University of Europe

The Islamic University of Europe ( Dutch Islamitische Universiteit Europa , abbreviation: IUE ; Turkish Avrupa İslam Üniversitesi ; English Islamic University of Europe ) is an institution based in Rotterdam that, according to its self-image, offers Islamic education at an academic level. The facility was established in 2001. Its current rector is Nedim Bahçekapılı .

history

The IUE was founded on August 3, 2001 in Schiedam after a dispute within the Islamic University of Rotterdam (IUR). The first rector was Süleyman Ateş. In September 2002 Ahmed Baghdadi became rector. Nedim Bahçekapılı has held this position since September 2003.

Locations

Outside the Netherlands, the institution has additional locations in Munich , Mannheim , Duisburg , Zurich and Vienna . The NVAO , the organization for the accreditation of educational institutions in the Netherlands and Flanders, emphasizes in this context that “qualifications from schools there are worthless”, because the accreditation by NVAO only applies to locations within the Netherlands.

criticism

The facility is particularly criticized for its dubious degrees. Currently only has Master -Studiengang Islamic chaplaincies a NVAO accreditation. The IUE is criticized for deliberately luring students with the fact that their educational offers are recognized [everywhere].

In December 2016, the Dutch tax investigators raided the university and three people were arrested. The allegation is that taxes in the amount of 8.5 million euros should have been evaded. During further raids and searches in March 2017, a revolver, 250 cartridges and five cans of tear gas were found in the apartment of the facility's secretary and treasurer, Arif Dogan, in Vlaardingen. The investigation has also revealed that some university employees are not legally resident, and there are reports that there are suspicions of illegal human trafficking.

The scandal made waves in the Turkish media in particular. Numerous news portals and daily newspapers reported on the incident, such as the BBC , Cumhuriyet and Sözcü .
