The Islamic Forum Penzberg is a mosque with a library and multi-purpose rooms in Penzberg, Upper Bavaria . It was designed by the Augsburg architect Alen Jasarevic on behalf of the Islamic Community Penzberg e. V. (IGP) and is seen as a “prototype of a new, contemporary Euro-Islam architecture” and has received several awards.

architecture

The Islamic Forum Penzberg is on the corner of Bichler Strasse and Fraunhoferstrasse in a commercial area in the city of Penzberg. It is built in a rectangular shape on an L-shaped floor plan. Since it is oriented towards Mecca , it is slightly oblique to the adjacent streets.

The mosque has a flat roof without a dome . The building ends on the Fraunhoferstrasse with a facade made of blue glass. This is the qibla facade of the mosque. Next to the facade is the minaret at one corner of the building . It is designed as a steel plate construction and consists of three blocks standing on top of one another. The upper end is a small sculpture made up of two crescent moons that are crossed into one another. The steel plates are completely covered with Arabic script, which reproduces the Islamic call to prayer. The spaces between the letters are milled out so that the impression of an openwork ornament is created. At night the minaret can be lit from within.

The main entrance facing Bichler Strasse is designed as a portal in the form of an open book. The Fātiha (opening sura of the Koran), the Basmala and verse 49:13 are in German and Arabic on both pages of the “book” .

Islamic community Penzberg

The Islamic Community Penzberg e. V. exists since 1994 and has grown to around 600 members (as of 2014). Benjamin Idriz is the imam of the mosque . Initially, the community used a backyard mosque , which soon no longer offered enough space for the 160 or so community members. The municipality therefore acquired the property on Bichler Strasse in 1999. The building application was submitted in 2002 and approved in 2003. In 2005 the Islamic Forum Penzberg was officially opened. The construction of the mosque was financed solely by donations, with the Emir of Sharjah providing most of the required sum of around three million  euros .

The Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution observed the community for several years because of possible connections between Imam Idriz and Muslim extremists . In the 2011 report for the protection of the constitution, the Islamic community was no longer mentioned and the non-profit status was recognized again.

Public response

After a visit to the mosque and a reception by the Imam under the traditional imperial seal of the Ottoman sultans , the Tughra , Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier recognized the Islamic Forum in Penzberg at the end of 2019 "as a model for Muslim communities in Germany" and declared, " he got to know a place where what he wanted for the country to be lived, namely curiosity and respect for one another ”.´

Furthermore, previous visitors include Sultan bin Mohamed al-Qasimi , Alois Glück , Nihad Awad , Louay M. Safi, Franz Maget and Joachim Herrmann .
