The Island Arena is a large valley in the northern part of the Darwin Mountains of the Transantarctic Mountains , which is occupied by a side tongue of the Darwin Glacier . It lies between the Colosseum Ridge and the Kennett Ridge . In the middle of the valley, Richardson Hill rises like an island-like nunatak from the ice masses.
Participants in the 1962 to 1963 campaign as part of New Zealand's Victoria University's Antarctic Expeditions mapped it and gave it its descriptive name.
