Ismael Nery

Ismael Nery (born October 9, 1900 in Belém , Pará state , Brazil , † April 6, 1934 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil) was a Brazilian modernist painter. He was an expressionist , surrealist and cubist . He was also active as a poet.

Life

He lost his father at the age of nine and his brother at the age of 18. Also at the age of nine, the family moved to Rio de Janeiro. At the age of 15 he enrolled in the Escola de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro, where he studied until 1920. In 1920 he spent the first time in Paris , where he stayed for a year and studied at the Académie Julian . In 1927 he came to Paris a second time, where he met Marc Chagall and André Breton . This was followed by participation in the "Salão de 1931", the "Salão Revolucionário" in 1931 and in 1933 at the 3rd Salão de Sociedade Pró-Arte Moderna .

After traveling through Argentina and Uruguay in late 1929, he fell ill with tuberculosis in 1930 . The illness severely prevented him from continuing his artistic work. Many hospital stays followed. As early as 1932 his autobiography appeared with the title “Historia de Ismael Neryuma melancholia autobiografia”, (story of Ismael Nery- a sad autobiography).

He was married to the poet and journalist Adalgisa Nery (1905–1980), who was also available as his muse and model. The couple had two children.

A documentation created in 1979 deals with the life and work of the painter. One of his closest and best friends was the lyric poet Murilo Mendes .

On April 6, 1934, he died of the consequences of his tuberculosis in his apartment. As a person, Nery always saw himself as an internationalist, but at the same time also as a devout Catholic, which was no contradiction for him.

As a painter, he is known as one of the most important modernists in Brazilian painting. His work was characterized by cubist, surrealist and expressionist references. Watercolors were one of the painting techniques he preferred. In 1965, all of his oeuvre was shown at a retrospective as part of the 8th International Biennale in São Paulo (Bienal Internacional de Arte). Art history divided his painterly work into three phases: 1922–1923 Expressionist, 1924–1929 Cubist, 1927–1934 Surrealist.

His poetry has not yet appeared in individual works, but scattered tangibly in magazines and anthologies , some also appeared posthumously.
