István Gyulai (born March 21, 1943 in Budapest , † March 12, 2006 in Monte Carlo ) was a Hungarian sprinter .

Career

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, he was eliminated over 400 m in the preliminary run.

In 1966 he reached the semi-finals at the European Athletics Championships in Budapest over 200 m and contributed to the eighth place of the Hungarian team in the 4-by-400-meter relay .

In 1963, 1964 and 1966 he was Hungarian champion over 400 m . He set his personal best over this distance of 47.3 s in 1963.

He later worked as a commentator for Hungarian television, where he made it to the head of sports. Since 1991 Gyulai was Secretary General of the International Athletics Association IAAF .

He was married to the middle-distance runner and sprinter Olga Kazi .

Gyulai died of cancer .
