Istvan Horthy

István Horthy de Nagybánya (born September 12, 1904 in Pola , Margraviate of Istria , Austria-Hungary ; † August 20, 1942 with Alexejewka , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) was the eldest son of the Hungarian Imperial Administrator Admiral Miklós Horthy , deputy regent of the Kingdom of Hungary and fighter pilot during the Second World War.

Life

In his youth, István Horthy and his younger brother Miklós the Younger were active members of the Catholic scout group of the Hungarian "Magyar Cserkészszövetség", although he was a Protestant. Horthy graduated as a mechanical engineer in 1928. He went to the United States for a year and worked at the Ford factory in Detroit, Michigan.

Back in the Kingdom of Hungary , he worked as an engineer in the MÁVAG locomotive factory . At the head of the development team, he took part in the development of important projects, such as the very successful MÁV series 424 . Between 1934 and 1938 Horthy headed the company and after 1938 he became its general manager .

In 1940 he married Countess Ilona von Edelsheim-Gyulai (1918–2013). István Horthy vigorously and publicly criticized the National Socialists. In January 1942 his father appointed him deputy regent and for some time he enjoyed enormous popularity in Hungary. István Horthy was sent to the Eastern Front shortly afterwards . His humanity and his dissent on the “ Jewish question ” also appears in a quote from one of his letters that he sent to his father from Kiev : “[…] Another sad topic: Jewish society, as I hear - there 20 or 30,000 men - are at the mercy of the sadists' passions for better or for worse, in every respect [...]. It is abhorrent that in the 20th century […]. I fear that one day we will pay very dearly for it. (Is it possible to let them work at home?) Otherwise, few will be left alive in the spring. [...] "

István Horthy died in a plane crash shortly after arriving in the occupied Soviet Union.

His widow, Countess Ilona Edelsheim-Gyulai, married John Bowden (* 1915) again on July 8, 1954 in London . On May 21, 2011 Ilona Countess Edelsheim-Gyulai was awarded the honorary citizenship of the Budapest Castle District .

His eldest son, Sharif István Horthy, is a successful engineer.
