István Nagy (composer)

István Nagy (born September 20, 1940 in Budapest ; † June 11, 2020 in Dülmen ) was a Hungarian composer , pianist , conductor and music teacher .

He attended the music high school in Szeged . After graduating from high school, he went to the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, where he studied piano, conducting, composition and music education until 1965. In 1968 he graduated from the master classes of Emil Gilels and Olga Zsukova at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow . In 1973 he was appointed professor at the Budapest Academy of Music. Nagy has lived in Germany since 1976. From 1986 to 2005 he worked as head of the piano department at the Marl Music School . His compositions include masses , children's operas , suites , film music , chamber music works , choral works as well as works for voice , orchestra and guitar . He was the director of the youth symphony orchestra in Dülmen, which he had built, and worked as a composition and piano teacher. His students include Matthias Pintscher and Matthias Hettmer .

  • 1995: Portrait by the University of Münster as part of its 11th composers festival
  • 2006: Culture bearer of the city of Dülmen for his oratorio "Opus Dulmanum"
