Itschensteg
The Itschensteg is a listed pedestrian bridge over the Bode in Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt .
It connects Adelheidstrasse with Stresemannstrasse to the south . Opposite the northern end of the bridge is the also listed building Adelheidstrasse 1 .
architecture
Today's bridge was built in 1905 as a reinforced concrete structure in Art Nouveau forms . In the spandrels of the bridge arches there are reliefs depicting frogs and griffins. The wrought iron parapets of the bridge also date from the Art Nouveau period.
history
There were pedestrian bridges in this area even before today's bridge was built. They led from the city to the Johannis pen . The demolition of an Itschensteg bridge is documented for 1605, and in 1628 a Ütschengasse is mentioned. The street was renamed Turnstrasse in 1878 , but the name of the bridge remained unchanged. The name Itsche means frog in the local dialect and possibly refers to an originally numerous occurrence of frogs in the area around the bridge.
