Architecture and history
According to a legend, the foundation of the monastery was carried out by an Ascanic count in the 12th century. He is said to have established a hospital for the poor near a spring . The first documentary mention dates back to 1229. The Johanniskapelle , which was built in the second half of the 12th century, has been preserved from the early days of the monastery .
The remaining buildings of the monastery that are preserved today were built between 1850 and 1900. Quedlinburg city planning officer Paul Laumer is responsible for many of the buildings . The new buildings were made in the style of late classicism , neo-Gothic and historicism , with the construction being carried out in half-timbered and brick.
At the northeast end of the area, after the incorporation of the Heiliggeist Hospital, the Sankt-Johannis-Kirche was built as a hospital church in 1906 .
The monastery grounds are surrounded by a listed wrought-iron property fence.
The Johannis monastery also had a cemetery a little further south, the area of which is now integrated into the Johannishain park .
