St. Johannis is a Protestant church in Quedlinburg and a church building from the beginning of the 20th century.

history

The Johanniskirche stands in the southeast of the city and was built in 1906 as a splendid neo-Gothic hospital church of the Johannis monastery, as the little Johanniskapelle became too small after the addition of the Heiliggeisthospital. In addition to the neo-Gothic, there are also elements of Art Nouveau . The consecration took place on December 11, 1906.

The Johanniskirche was a Protestant parish church within the Protestant parish of Quedlinburg. On January 6, 2018, the local community celebrated the service for the last time. The church will be converted into an archive building for the Halberstadt church district. A desecration did not take place. The bells and clock are still used.

Architecture and equipment

The hall church is built as a stone-faced stone building. The chancel of the church faces west, which contradicts the usual construction.

The artistically valuable church windows in the chancel were made in what was then the leading glass painting establishment Ferdinand Müller in Quedlinburg. They show the four evangelists and four prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel) in the nave . The rosette of the chancel is dedicated to the patron saint John the Baptist and depicts him at the baptism of Jesus.

The organ of the Hausneindorfer organ building company Röver , for which the company Gustav Kuntzsch , Wernigerode , created the organ case, has 2 manuals.

Two bells made of cast steel were cast by the Bochumer Verein in 1906 and installed in the church tower . The big bell rings in d, the small bell in f sharp. The mechanical clockwork dates from 1906. The dials and hands, rusted through, were removed in November 1994 and replaced with new ones in September 1995. Also in November 1994 the old tip, the button and the rod of the weather vane were dismantled. In November 1994 the tower received a new top, a new button and instead of the weather vane pole, a tower cross . Until about 1970 the tower also had four small corner points.

The large ceiling chandelier, equipped with LED bulbs, was moved to the Marktkirche in June 2020 , and the Johannis stalls have replaced the previous benches in the central nave of the Nikolaikirche since March 2020.
