Viola cryana (French name: Violette de Cry ) is an extinct species of violet ( Viola ) that was endemic to the French Yonne department . Viola cryana was discovered in 1860, but not scientifically described until 1878.

description

This biennial or perennial herbaceous plant was no taller than twelve centimeters and had a smooth stem . The bright green leaves were thick and fleshy. The stipules were incised and had a central lobe with entire margins.

The relatively large flowers were zygomorphic . The petals were light purple. At six to seven millimeters, the spur was larger than the chalice . The plant bloomed from May to June.

die out

Viola cryana grew up in very limited limestone - outcrops in the area around Cry southeast of Tonnerre in the French department of Yonne . Due to the destruction of its habitat by limestone mining for cement production and overexploitation by plant collectors, the species was already considered extinct by 1930.
