The Iuventa is a former fishing vessel built in 1962.
history
The ship was under the hull number 279 on the shipyard Scheepswerf Vooruit in Zaandam built. It started sailing as Maria ( fishing license : KW 202). Later names were from 1971 Waterman II and from 1990 Jonas (fishing license: HD 202).
In 1990 the ship, which had been used for fishing until then, was sold and converted into an offshore safety and support ship. The ship, renamed Telco Suez , was used in the construction of offshore wind farms . In late 2001 it was resold and renamed Alk Explorer .
In 2016 the ship came to the organization Jugend Rettet , which had it converted by the Emden shipyard and dock operations for the purpose of sea rescue in June of that year. It then operated in the Mediterranean to receive shipwrecked refugees . In April 2017, the ship itself got into distress during a rescue mission due to bad weather. On board were around 400 refugees who had previously been rescued from distress at sea and were handed over to the VOS Hestia .
In August 2017, the Juventa, led by Pia Klemp, was arrested by the Italian authorities in the port of Lampedusa . The organization Jugend Rettet was accused of having worked with people smugglers. So far there is no trial or procedure against youth rescues. In order to seize the ship Iuventa , other paragraphs were used. Forensic Architecture has created a three-dimensional simulation based on published prosecutorial documents and publicly available information that is intended to refute the allegations. This was shown at Manifesta 12 in Palermo in 2018 as a Juventa Case in order to create a counter-public beyond the TV images and courtrooms.
In June 2018, the Italian public prosecutor announced that it was expanding its investigation to 24 people, including ten former crew members of the Iuventa. There is a risk of up to 20 years imprisonment.
In July 2018, Iuventa released a cinema documentary about the ship and its missions.
On May 29, 2019, the captain Pia Klemp told Joko and Klaas about their experiences and impressions on the Mediterranean in a 15 minute special . Among other things, she reported on a young mother whose deceased child had to be stored in a freezer because the Iuventa was not allowed to moor in a safe harbor (even if the child was possibly rescued).
