Ivan Shearer

Ivan Anthony Shearer (born December 9, 1938 in Adelaide - July 9, 2019) is an Australian lawyer . Until 2003 he was Professor of International Law at the University of Sydney .

Life

After studying law at the University of Adelaide , which Shearer graduated in 1960, he was admitted to the bar for South Australia . Further admissions followed for Victoria and New South Wales in 1975 and 1982 at the High Court of Australia . After a stay at the Hague Academy of International Law and a position as a tutor at Northwestern University , he returned to his alma mater and obtained his Master of Laws in 1964 . From 1971 to 1974 he was advisor to the government of Lesotho on international law and from 1975 to 1992 professor at the University of New South Wales , from 1984 to 1990 as dean of the law faculty. He has also acted as an advisor to the FAO and the Australian Government on several international law issues. From 1993 until his retirement in 2003, Shearer was Professor of International Law at the University of Sydney. During this time he was visiting professor at the International Maritime Law Institute in Malta and at the United States Naval War College . In 1999 and 2002 the Australian government appointed Shearer as ad hoc judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea . Since March 2010, Shearer has been a member of an arbitration tribunal established at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to settle a dispute between Bangladesh and India over the demarcation of the border in the Bay of Bengal .

He is also a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the UN Human Rights Committee .
