TurboStar is the name for a truck series from Iveco . From 1984 it succeeded the Iveco 190 Turbo and the Fiat 170/190 and was replaced in 1993 by the Iveco EuroStar .

development

In July 1984 Iveco handed over the first 190 test vehicles of the TurboStar series to the press; in September the Italian trade magazine tuttoTrasporti published the first photos of the new vehicle. For the first time in the truck sector, Iveco used silver gray metallic as the official paintwork. This was previously only reserved for special orders.

The TurboStar, like its sister model Iveco TurboTech, was an evolution of the Iveco 190 model, although more than 2000 components from the previous model were changed. The first tests with the TurboStar began in September 1982. A large-scale study commissioned by Iveco with more than 2000 international truck drivers surveyed showed in the same year that one of the most important factors when choosing a new truck was cab comfort . Iveco has therefore paid particular attention to redesigning the cab and making it user-friendly, as well as reducing vibrations and noise.

Tests in the wind tunnel at the Fiat Research Center Orbassano had led to an aerodynamically favorably shaped cabin (C w value 0.53). The roof spoilers were height adjustable and could be matched to the size of the trailer. From model year 1990/91, a revised spoiler variant was offered as an option (primarily for tractor units). These were longer, with a lateral overhang in the end area and were given side wings (so-called side flaps) running vertically behind the driver's cab in order to optimize the aerodynamic closure towards the semi-trailer.

Furnishing

The exterior mirrors were electrically adjustable and heated as standard (operated via a cable remote control that could be removed from the dashboard). The center console had air conditioning as standard and an extendable table, the overhead console had two adjustable reading spots and three storage compartments. Roller blinds to darken the sleeping area, air suspension, electric windows in both doors were installed as standard, as were two berths, fog lights and a wardrobe. The main options included a refrigerator and microwave. The TurboStar was currently the new standard in the industry for comfort.

Drive and variants

Two engines were initially available: a straight six-cylinder (13,798 cm³) with an output of 243 kW (330 hp) and a V8 cylinder (17,174 cm³) with 309 kW (420 hp), which premiered in 1981 in the Iveco 190 Turbo . The engines had been developed by Fiat / Iveco and had charge air cooling and a turbocharger (V8 with two turbochargers without charge air cooling).

Iveco used the ZF EcoSplit 16 with 16 synchronized gears as a series transmission. The eight-cylinder was optionally available with an Eaton fuller transmission (13 gears), the six-cylinder with an Eaton twin splitter transmission (12 gears). Iveco also offered a semi-automatic SAMT from Eaton. An anti-lock braking system was initially optional and later installed as standard.

In parallel to the Iveco TurboTech , the Fiat-Iveco 6-cylinder in-line engine with 13,798 cm³ and an output of 265 kW (360 hp) was installed from 1987, which replaced the previous engine. In 1990 its output was increased to 277 kW (377 hp), that of the eight-cylinder model to 350 kW (476 hp) with intercooler.

From 1991 until the end of the series, the special model "Special HP" (HP for "High Performance") was offered. The "Special" stood out from the usual series-production vehicles with a front spoiler lip and rims painted in the same color as the driver's cab, a long, standard-revised roof spoiler with sideflaps, as well as a full chassis cladding made of corrugated, dark-gray plastic and a pair of chrome-plated compressed air fans above the left sleeping cabin window . A yellow decorative strip on the front and door flanks specially created for this special model, a "SPECIAL (HP - High Performance TurboStar)" lettering attached vertically to the side flaps and higher-quality cabin equipment, such as B. Seats with turquoise-blue synthetic leather cover, mattress cover in a matching color and dark carpet also made the special model stand out. The special model "Special" was available ex works exclusively as a two-axle tractor unit in the colors black-metallic and white. The drive components corresponded to the range of engines and transmissions of series vehicles valid at that time. So there was the "Special" as type 190-38 and 190-48. As the highlight of the TurboStar evolution, the "Special" also represents the farewell model of this vehicle series.
