Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri

Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri (born September 18, 1937 in Kroonstad , † April 6, 2009 in Pretoria ) was a South African politician.

Life

She earned her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Fort Hare in Alice , Eastern Cape, before taking a teaching job in Natal accepted. Shortly afterwards she went into exile in Swaziland , Zambia , USA and Namibia before returning to South Africa in 1990. During her stay in the USA, she graduated as a Ph.D. in Sociology from Rutgers University .

From 1993 to 1996 she was chairman of the South African broadcasting company SABC . She was the first woman and the first black woman to fill this position. Matsepe-Casaburri was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and was Prime Minister of the Free State Province from December 18, 1996 to June 15, 1999 . Here, too, she was the first woman in this role. Since 1999 she has served as Minister of Communications in the South African Government ( Cabinet Mbeki I , Cabinet Mbeki II and Cabinet Motlanthe ).

On September 25, 2008 - after Thabo Mbeki's resignation and before Kgalema Motlanthe was elected - she ran the business of the President for about half a day.
