Iwan Brandes (born February 5, 1882 in Lübeck , † March 1, 1935 in Berlin ) was a German naval officer , most recently Rear Admiral of the Reichsmarine .

Life

Brandes joined the Imperial Navy as a midshipman on April 10, 1901 and completed his basic training on the cruiser frigate SMS Moltke . He came to the Naval School on April 1, 1902, and was appointed Ensign at Sea on April 22, 1902 . Brandes then served on the liner SMS Wettin from October 1, 1903 to September 30, 1905 . As a lieutenant at sea (since September 29, 1905) he was assigned to the II. Torpedo Department for six months, before he was employed as an officer on watch on the small cruiser SMS Lübeck for another six months . From October 1, 1906 to March 31, 1907 he was in the same position on the small cruiser SMS Munich . Brandes was then transferred to the ship of the line SMS Hessen and on April 27, 1907 he was promoted to lieutenant at sea . As such, he was commanded from October 1, 1908 to March 31, 1910 for service to the Admiralty's staff of the Navy. For six months he then worked as a company officer in the II. Sailor Division and then until September 30, 1911 as a company officer and adjutant of the II. Shipyard Division. This was followed by transfer to the large liner SMS Rheinland and his promotion there to lieutenant captain on March 22, 1913.

Brandes remained on board from the beginning of the First World War until February 12, 1916. From May 16, 1916 to February 5, 1917 he acted as first officer on the auxiliary cruiser SMS Wolf under the command of Karl August Nerger . After the capture of the former Gutenfels and the equipment for the auxiliary cruiser Iltis , Brandes took over the ship as commander on February 5, 1917 and waged a trade war in the Indian Ocean . When the polecat was scuttled by the British HMS Odin , he and his crew fell into British captivity on March 21, 1917 . Brandes and the German seamen were imprisoned in the Ahmednagar internment camp in India and only released to Germany in April 1920.

In the meantime promoted to corvette captain (since March 8, 1920) Brandes was from April 28, 1920 to September 30, 1923 as a member of the naval command as a representative of the navy to the Central Office for Intelligence in the Post Office . From October 1, 1923 to February 14, 1924, Brandes was placed at the disposal of the chief of the North Sea naval station . He was then used as the first officer on the Alsace liner . Brandes worked in the same position on the liner Hannover for another year . On September 28, 1926 he came as Chief of Staff for the Inspection of the Navy's Education System and in the meantime was promoted to frigate captain on December 1, 1926 and to sea captain on December 1, 1928 . Brandes was then appointed commander of the Kiel Naval Arsenal. He held this function until March 28, 1932 and was then retired on March 31, 1932 while simultaneously being awarded the character of Rear Admiral.
