Ivan Kozhedub ( Russian Иван Никитович Кожедуб , scientific. Transliteration Ivan Nikitović Kožedub * 8. June 1920 in Obraschijewka , Chernigov Governorate , Ukrainian SSR , † 8. August 1991 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) was a Soviet pilot , Marshal of the flyer and triple Hero of the Soviet Union .

Life

After completing his training at a vocational school for chemistry and technology, he joined the Red Army in 1940 , received his pilot training in 1941 at the Chuguyev Military Aviation School, and then worked there as a flight instructor.

In November 1942, as part of the German-Soviet War , he was transferred to the front, where he soon became involved in first aerial battles. Koschedub achieved 62 confirmed victories in 120 aerial battles in 326 missions, which he flew mainly with Lavochkin La-5 or La-7 , including against a Me 262 jet aircraft . This made him the most successful Soviet (and allied) fighter pilot in World War II . He scored the majority of his kills (45) on the La-5. He was three times as Hero of the Soviet Union awarded (Feb 4, 1944, August 19, 1944 and 18 August 1945), the last time with simultaneous promotion to Major , where he since August 1944 as deputy commander of the 176th Guards Fighter Regiment with the rank of Captain stood.

After the war, Koschedub studied at the Military Academy of the Air Force in Monino in 1949 .

In the Korean War he was in command of the 324th Fighter Division.

In 1956 he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR "KJ Voroshilov" and was deputy of the Supreme Soviet several times . Since 1964 he was the first deputy of the chief of the air forces of a military district.

After his promotion to Colonel General in 1970, he moved to the air force command in 1971. Since 1978 he worked in the group of inspectors general of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR. In 1985 he was promoted to Marshal of the Aviators. Koschedub died in 1991 and was buried in Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery.

Koschedub wrote two autobiographical books.
