Life

Ivan Gorozhankin studied at the natural science department of the physical-mathematical faculty at the Moscow State University . After graduating in 1871, he worked at Moscow University, where he held a chair in the Department of Botany from 1874. In 1875 he became a lecturer and completed his habilitation six years later. Goroshankin is the founder of the Moscow Morphological Botanical School ( Московская морфолого-ботаническая школа ), from which numerous later university professors emerged. He was also Vice President of the Moscow Society for Natural Scientists ( Московское общество испытателей природы ).

After his death, Gorozhankin was buried in the Pyatnitskoye cemetery in Moscow.

research

Gorozhankin is considered the founder of comparative plant embryology within Russian botany . In his studies he mainly explored the green algae and gymnosperms (naked-seed plants). His studies mainly dealt with comparative morphology . Goroschakin found similarities between the zoospores of the 8- to 16-cell spherical green alga Pandorina and the male gametes of the 16- to 32-cell green alga Eudorina elegans . He was also the first to describe the sexual reproduction of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas braunii . In one of his last works, "On the research of the morphology and systematics of chlamydomons" (1891) ( "К исследованию морфологии и систематики хламидомонад" ), the last chapter of which was published posthumously in 1905 after his death " ) sexual evolution of reproduction. He described the gradual course of the evolution from isogamy to anisogamy and oogamy and showed that these three gamete types can also occur within one genus .

Already in his dissertation in 1880 "On the corpuscles and the sexual process in gymnospermen plants" ( О корпускулах и половом процессе у голосеменных растений ) the gymnosperozhankin dealt with the propagation of the gymnospermen. Among other things, he examined the structure of the archegonium and, in 1883, was the first to describe the process of fertilization in gymnosperms on the dwarf pine ( Pinus pumila ) . He also described the similarities between the fertilization of the archegonium in lower and higher plants.
