János Berze Nagy

János Berze Nagy (born August 23, 1879 in Besenyőtelek , Füzesabony small area , Heves county ; † April 6, 1946 in Pécs ) was a Hungarian linguist and literary scholar.

János Berze Nagy attended the Gyöngyös grammar school from 1889 to 1896 . Even as a high school student he was very impressed by the Hungarian folk tradition and began collecting at the age of 14. He studied at the Philological Faculty of the University of Budapest . As a student of Professor Lajos Katona , he took part in the research and study of Hungarian folk tales .

On behalf of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Kisfaludy Society , he collected material for the Hungarian dialect dictionary , which resulted in the work Dialect in Heves County . In 1905 he received his doctorate in philosophy.

Between 1905 and 1939 he worked as a school inspector . In addition, he continued to study folk tales.

Thanks to his work, fairy tale research received international renown, in which he acquired a leading role for Hungary.

Honors

The grammar school in Gyöngyös was named after him in 1971. In Pécs there is a tradition among bridal couples to put padlocks on their house as a vow of loyalty.
