János Szathmári (born March 25, 1969 in Nádudvar ) is a former Hungarian handball goalkeeper .

Career

The 1.85 m tall and 95 kg heavy Hungarian began playing handball at Nádudvari SE. After a stint at Debreceni Dózsa, he moved to KC Veszprém in 1994 , with whom he won five Hungarian championships and cups. Internationally, he reached the round of 16 in the EHF Champions League in 1994/95 and 1995/96 and the quarterfinals in 1997/98, 1998/99 and 1999/2000. In the 1996/97 European Cup Winners' Cup he lost to Bidasoa Irún in the final . In 2001 he signed with league competitor Dunaferr SE , with whom he reached the semi-finals in the 2001/02 European Cup Winners' Cup and in the 2002/03 EHF Cup . After two seasons he left Dunaferr and went to Tatabánya KC . In 2005 he moved to the Spanish league ASOBAL to Pilotes Posada , but returned to Dunaferr after one season. After a year at PLER KC Budapest , he played at Balatonfüredi KSE until his retirement in 2013 .

With the Hungarian national team , János Szathmári took part in the European Championships in 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2004 as well as the World Championships in 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2003. In the 1992 Olympics , he finished seventh in the 2004 Olympics fourth place. With 302 internationals , in which he scored two goals, he has the second most appearances for Hungary behind Péter Kovács (323).
