Gaudenzia (* 1942 or 1944 in Magliano in Toscana ; † 1972 or 1974 ) was an Italian racehorse that won the Palio di Siena several times . Gaudenzia's rise was described by Marguerite Henry in the book The Sieger von Siena .

Beginnings

Gaudenzia came from the Maremma and was, at least according to Marguerite Henry, the daughter of a work horse and an Arabian stallion named Sanssouci, who belonged to a prince of Lombardy . Henry says that the owner of the stallion had hoped for a different result from the mating than the petite and nervous foal and the farmer who had his mare mated did not buy the animal. Farfalla, as the foal was called, went through several hands as a cart horse, according to the portrayal in the novel, before she was finally taken to her role as a racing horse originally planned by the prince.

While Farfalla was still used as a workhorse, her future trainer and Fantino Giorgio Terni grew up in Monticello Amiata . He was hired by V. Ramalli from the contrada of the snail as a jockey for smaller races in the country and in the spring of 1952 he was called to Siena to train several horses for the July Palio.

In the meantime, Farfalla changed hands in Casalino : The racing stable owner Busisi from Siena bought the mare and handed her over to Dr. Giorgio Celli. According to Marguerite Henry's account, the mare's first report to the Palio had to be withdrawn because of colic ; in August Palio 1952 it ran under Giuseppe Gentili.

1953

In 1953 Giorgio Terni was asked by the captain of the contrada of the mussel (Nicchio) to ride in the Palio on July 2nd. Farfalla was also admitted to this Palio. She allocated the lot to the Contrada des Waldes, while Nicchio received a horse named Turbulento or Turbolento. Farfalla, who was ridden by Ivan Magnani in both races in 1953, was injured by a hoof hit during rehearsals, according to Marguerite Henry, but entered the race because the horses that had been drawn could no longer be replaced. Giorgio Terni fell on Turbulento; the race was won by the team of the contrada of the turtle (Tartuca). Terni played the August Palio of 1953 for the Contrada of the Panthers; The winner was the team of the forest. Since Ramalli closed his stable in autumn, Terni was now without a job in Siena. Police chief Giachetti, Farfalla's new owner, hired him to carefully train the injured mare again, and Terni took the animal, which has now been renamed Gaudenzia, back to his hometown and worked with him there. On May 15, 1954, according to Henry, he won a straight race with Gaudenzia in Casole d'Elsa .

1954

1954 Gaudenzia was again admitted to the Palio. She was drawn to the Contrada der Welle (Onda), whose leader, General Barbarulli, signed Giorgio Terni as Fantino. At the 536th Palio di Siena, Gaudenzia won under Terni. Giorgio Terni was then nicknamed "Vittorino". In the August Palio of 1954 Giorgio Terni rode again for the contrada of the mussel. At the draw he got the mare Rosella, while Gaudenzia started for the contrada of the giraffe. Gaudenzia threw her Fantino Mario or Marino Lupi in this race and overtook Rosella, who was in the lead, at the last moment. Since she had not lost her Spennachiera, the symbol of her contrada, she was considered the winner in this race. In the fall of 1954, an extraordinary third Palio was held in honor of the Marian Year . Gaudenzia also won this race, now ridden by Giorgio Terni again. Up until that point, the Palio di Siena had never had such a winning streak in three consecutive races.

1955 and the following years

In 1955 Gaudenzia took part in the August race under Giuseppe Gentili and in 1956 under Primo Arzilli in the July race, both times unsuccessful. But in the August Palio of 1956 Gaudenzia won her fourth Palio di Siena, this time under Francesco Cuttoni. In 1957 she was ridden in the July race by Umberto Castiglionesi and in the August race by Ivan Magnani and did not win. In 1958 she only competed in the August race under Terni, but did not win this race either. In 1959 she competed in both races, once under Giuseppe Vischetti and once under Donato Tamburelli, in 1960 she ran her last Palio in July. The Fantino was Lazzero Beligni, who fell from his horse during the race.

In the 1960s, the robust Maremma horses for the Palio went out of fashion and were more and more replaced by animals from Sardinia ; one of the first of these horses to be successful at the Palio was the mare Uberta, who won all races in 1960 and 1961, twice under Giorgio Terni.

Gaudenzia later lived on the estate of Benito Giachetti in the hills of Celsa (municipality of Sovicille ) and reached the age of 30 years. Giorgio Terni, who won seven times in 22 races, had to give up his Fantino career after an accident.
