Järva-Jaani ( German Sankt Johannis ) is a patch ( Estonian alev ) in the rural municipality of Järva in the Estonian district of Järva with an area of 126 km². It has 1760 inhabitants.
Until 2017, the place also formed an independent municipality ( Järva-Jaani vald ).
The church of Järva-Jaani, dedicated to John the Baptist , whose origins date back to the 13th century, is worth seeing . The altar plate dates from the 14th century, the baroque pulpit by the Tallinn woodcarver Franz Hoppenstätt from 1648. The west tower was added in 1881.
Personalities
The Baltic German chronicler Christian Kelch , who wrote his history of Livonia from 1688 to 1691, was active in Järva-Jaani .
Eduard Gebhardt (1838–1925), who later became a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , was born in Järva-Jaani.
