Jérôme Pétion de Villeneuve (born January 3, 1756 in Chartres , † summer 1794 near Bordeaux ) was a leader during the French Revolution .

Pétion de Villeneuve initially worked as a lawyer in Chartres and, when the Estates General were appointed, came to Versailles as a deputy of the Third Estate , where he soon made himself known for his opposition to Mirabeau and for the ruthless attacks on the Queen.

In December 1790 he was elected President of the National Assembly and in June 1791 he was appointed President of the Paris Criminal Tribunal. In this capacity, together with Latour-Maubourg and Antoine Barnave , he was tasked with repatriating the royal family who had been seized on the run.

On November 16, 1791, Pétion de Villeneuve became mayor of Paris , his opponent being Lafayette , who was supported by the court . Known as a partisan of the radicals, he let them free the way: with the Tuileries storm on August 10, 1792, the revolution finally overthrew the monarchy in France. In the National Convention , of which he was the first president, Pétion de Villeneuve held to Gironde and voted in the trial against King Louis XVI. for the call to the people and the death of the king without delay. On December 1, 1792, de Villeneuve was replaced as Mayor of Paris by Nicolas Chambon .

After the betrayal of Dumouriez 'was exposed, Robespierre used this as a weapon against Pétion de Villeneuve and attacked him violently. On May 31st, he was publicly ostracized and on June 2nd, he was arrested. Pétion de Villeneuve managed to escape to the south of the country, where he stayed until June 1794 , but he was tracked down there. He fled again with a companion to the Bordeaux area, where he was soon found a corpse, half eaten by wolves.
