Józef Gielniak (born February 18, 1932 in Denain, France , † May 28, 1972 in Kowary ) was a Polish graphic artist who died prematurely of tuberculosis . He preferred the linocut technique .

biography

He was born as the second son in a family of Polish emigrants in Danain near Valenciennes in the Nord department . His father was an industrial worker. He studied for a year at the École des Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes. He renounced the scholarship he had been offered at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and came to Poland with his mother in 1950 to study diplomacy. Before he left for Poland, he fell ill with tuberculosis . During his stay in the sanatorium, he passed the Abitur examination. He spent a lot of time in sanatoriums, which prevented him from studying. Because of his deteriorating health, he stayed in the "Bukowiec" sanatorium in Kowary for life , where he accepted the position of archivist. Professor Stanisław Dawski from the Art Academy in Wrocław offered him an individual course of study, which Gielniak finished. He was buried in the old cemetery in Kowary.

He showed his artistic talents early on. As early as 1947 he was awarded the Union Française des Oeuvres Laïques d'Éducation Artistique for drawings and watercolors.

He received several awards at international graphic exhibitions. In 1964 he was awarded the 2nd degree state prize. He preferred the linocut technique . His graphics were mainly dedicated to life in the sanatorium.
