Jörg Kaehler (1997)

Jörg Kaehler (born December 19, 1930 in Frankfurt am Main ; † July 19, 2015 in Neunkirchen-Seelscheid ) was a German actor, director, theater director and author.

Live and act

Jörg Kaehler attended high school in Rostock, took private acting lessons there and started his first engagement in Greifswald at the age of 18.

His path led him via Neustrelitz, Bernburg / Staßfurt to the Landestheater Eisenach , where his career as a youthful hero began. He played numerous roles in this subject with Romeo as the culmination. After three years he moved to the Rostock Volkstheater . Here he stayed for four years and opened up the subject of the first hero, which he crowned with Karl Moor in the robbers and Prince Bolkonski in "War and Peace". Then he went to Leipzig for nine years. There he played different roles from the Templar in Nathan the Wise to the Iron Ring in Biedermann and the arsonists to He in " The Four-Poster Bed ". In 1969 a new challenge attracted him. A musical ensemble was set up in Halle. Kaehler became one of the pillars there. He played and sang from Bel Ami to Obolski to the Man from La Mancha in all roles in the genre that was current at the time. After a year in Halle, he began directing. The production was televised and received several awards. From then on he directed continuously, also several times as a guest in Leipzig, where he had a success with Cabaret .

His work for television deserves special mention, where he succeeded in bringing works such as “Die Zaubernacht” (The Magic Night) by the state unloved Poland Mrozek onto the screen. The production of the GDR's first rock opera was a risk and appeared to be a sensation in professional circles. He wrote pieces for the medium of television. “Towards one another” was also recognized internationally.

In Rostock, Kaehler staged a spectrum from Shakespeare to Offenbach. He tried to use system-critical tones in his work. In "Orpheus in the Underworld" he went too far in the opinion of the authorities. The staging narrowly escaped cancellation. Now his work was viewed with increasing suspicion by the party. Over time, he, who had never made a secret of his aversion to the state, got sidelined. He was spied on, his activity in the drama school stopped, guest appearances curtailed; he was no longer allowed to visit his relatives in the west. Finally, he applied for an exit visa, which was granted in 1984.

Kaehler first appeared in the West as an actor and director. This included, among other things, productions of “Cyrano de Bergerac”, “The Robbers” and “Käthchen von Heilbronn” at the Schleswig-Holstein State Theater , as well as acting roles such as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman , Oppenheimer, Otto Frank , the title role in An Inspector comes in Hamburg, as well as comedies in Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Bonn and Hanover.

In 1996 Kaehler began to realize his goals independently. He converted a room into a theater in the basement of his house and initially presented small plays alongside literary programs. He later expanded the repertoire. The pieces became more personal, the program more demanding. In 1999, a support association was founded and Kaehler took over as chairman. Further venues were opened up, for example B. in the Kunsthaus Seelscheid. In the summer of 2000, Kaehler built the first open-air theater in the Rhein-Sieg district in Neunkirchen and finally opened the Siegburg open-air theater in 2004 at the abbey in Siegburg . He played Goldoni, Ibsen, O'Neill, Vilar, Arbusov, Neil Simon, Hacks, Rostand, Hofmannsthal, Shakespeare and Goethe.

Jörg Kaehler lived in Neunkirchen-Seelscheid near Siegburg and in Leipzig. He died in his home on July 19, 2015.

Awards

In 2012 he was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his decades of commitment in the cultural field.
