Jörg Kukies

Jörg Kukies (born February 21, 1968 ) is a German economist and has been a civil servant in the Federal Ministry of Finance since 2018 .

Life

Kukies first studied economics at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and, supported by a scholarship , received a maîtrise diploma from the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in 1994 .

At the same time as his studies, the SPD member was chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate state association of the youth organization Jusos in the early 1990s as a predecessor of Andrea Nahles .

With the support of a McCloy scholarship , he completed postgraduate studies in public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School from 1995, completing a Master of Public Administration in 1997. In 2001 he received his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business with the theses The effects of introducing a new stock exchange on the IPO process and venture capital financing and Stock Markets for High-Technology Firms and Venture Capital Financing: Evidence from Europe.

Since 2000 he worked for Goldman Sachs in London, from 2004 to 2011 in the Frankfurt am Main branch. There he was responsible for the Fixed Income, Equities and Structured Products divisions, most recently as deputy head of Philip Holzer in the equity business. In 2006 he was appointed Managing Director and in 2010 Partner. From 2011 he was back in London as head of the EMEA Equity Derivative Sales division. After becoming a partner at Goldman Sachs in 2010, he took over from Philip Holzer as head of the German business with stocks, fixed-income securities and derivatives. At the end of the same year, Kukies and Wolfgang Fink were given the co-chairmanship of Goldman Sachs Germany and Austria, succeeding Alexander Dibelius .

In 2018, the new Federal Finance Minister in the Merkel IV cabinet , Olaf Scholz , brought him to his ministry as one of three permanent state secretaries , where Kukies is responsible for the issues of Europe and the financial market. Criticism of this appointment came from the ranks of the opposition parties, the Greens and the Left, and from the LobbyControl initiative .

In addition to his professional activity, Kukies says he is involved in projects for the integration of migrants and refugees in Germany. In his private life he is a fan of FSV Mainz 05 and a marathon runner.
