Jørgen Petersen

Jørgen Malakias Pavia Samuel Petersen (born September 4, 1918 in Qeqertarsuatsiaat , † April 14, 1991 ) was a Greenlandic pastor and local politician .

Life

Jørgen Petersen was the son of the hunter Hans Lars Julius Petersen (1895–1982) and his wife Sofia Maria Ane Hansen (1898–1927). Through his father, he was a great-nephew of Johan Petersen (1867-1960). On October 8, 1939, he married Margrethe Beate Katje Thala Berglund (1919–1997). The couple had eight children, including Sofie Petersen (* 1955) , who later became bishop .

Jørgen Petersen attended Grønland's seminary , which he graduated in 1938. From 1949 to 1950 he was enrolled at the Haslev University . In 1951 he was elected to the Nuuk Municipality Council, where he stayed until 1953. From 1956 to 1959 he was a council member in the Maniitsoq community . It was not until 1959 that he was ordained at the age of 40 and then installed as a pastor in Maniitsoq . In 1960 he moved to Nanortalik . From 1962 to 1963 he was the Greenlandic pastor in Denmark . From 1963 to 1967 he was a member of the municipal council of the municipality of Nanortalik and thus de facto mayor. From 1963 to 1964 he also attended the college in Løgumkloster and the pastoral seminar in Copenhagen . From 1967 to 1969 he was pastor of Nanortalik again and then until 1970 a second time Greenland pastor in Denmark. In 1970 he attended the pastors' college in Nærum and then became pastor in Qullissat , where he stayed until 1972. From 1976 to 1978 he was pastor in his hometown of Qeqertarsuatsiaat and then moved to Sisimiut , where he retired in 1983.

Jørgen Petersen served as an interpreter for the Danish zoologist Christian Vibe in Kangerlussuaq in 1957 . From 1963 to 1969 he was an administrative member of the Greenland Consumer Co-op. On September 10, 1990 he received the Nersornaat in silver and died six months later.
