Sofie Petersen
Sofie Bodil Louise Lisbeth Petersen (born November 23, 1955 in Maniitsoq ) is a Greenlandic Evangelical Lutheran clergyman . Since 1995 she has been bishop of the Diocese of Greenland , which as an autonomous diocese belongs to the Danish People's Church .
Life
Sofie Petersen was born in 1955, the seventh of eight children, to Jørgen Malakias Pavia Samuel Petersen (1918–1991) and Margrethe Beate Katje Thala Berglund (1919–1997). Her father was born in Qeqertarsuatsiaat as the son of the hunter Hans Lars Julius Petersen and his wife Sofia Maria Ane Hansen and later became a pastor and head catechist in Kangaamiut . Her mother also came from Qeqertarsuatsiaat and was the daughter of the hunter Johannes Kornelius Lars Berglund and his wife Henriette Sofia Ketura Regina Boassen. One of her ancestors is the pioneer Anders Olsen .
She spent the first years of her life in Nanortalik and then attended secondary school in Nuuk . Then she went to Denmark, where she finished school in Birkerød in 1975 . Enthusiastic about the spiritual activities of her father, she had wanted to become a pastor since she was eleven and so she began to study at Grønland's seminary in Nuuk . On July 25, 1976 she married the pastor Christian Tidemand (* 1954), son of Frederik Rasmussen and Anna Tidemand, who became the father of their two children, Andreas (* 1980) and Emilie (* 1989). After a year and a half at the seminary , the rector recommended that she study theology at the University of Copenhagen . There she became the first Greenlandic theologian in 1986. Her ordination took place in 1987 in Sisimiut . From then on she was a pastor in her hometown until 1990 before moving to Ilulissat . There she also became an institution administrator. In 1995 she received her episcopal ordination in Nuuk . She became the second and first female bishop of Greenland after Kristian Mørch and the second bishop of the Kingdom of Denmark after Lise-Lotte Rebel, who had been consecrated just a month earlier . After 25 years in office, she announced her resignation that same year in March 2020.
From 1983 to 1986 she was a member of Den Grønlandske Kirkesag . From 1989 she was involved in the translation of the New Testament into Greenlandic . In 1996 she was made a knight of the Dannebrog Order. In 2001 she became a first grade knight . In 2002 she received the Nersornaat in silver. In 2006 she was elected to the Executive Committee of the World Council of Churches . On September 27, 2019 she received an honorary doctorate from Ilisimatusarfik .
