Kristian Mørch

Johannes Peter Kristian Ari Tobias Mørch (born April 5, 1930 in Ukkusissat ; † May 3, 2017 in Ilulissat ) was a Greenland cleric .

Life

Kristian Mørch was the son of the hunter Abraham Johannes Thomas Mørch (1902–1982) and his wife Anna Sofie Mariane Sara Willumsen (1907–1986). Through his mother he was a grandson of Landrat Tobias Willumsen . Kristian Mørch married on December 28, 1958 Elisabeth Josefine Regine Elberg Fleischer (* 1932), a sister of the journalist Jørgen Fleischer (1924–2012).

He attended the Efterskole in Aasiaat from 1944 to 1946 . He then attended the college and Grønland's seminar in Nuuk . In 1950 he moved to the seminary in Haslev , before studying theology at the University of Copenhagen from 1955 to 1958 . From 1958 to 1959 he was a pastor in Qaqortoq . He then worked in Qaanaaq from 1959 to 1965 . After a year in Paamiut , he worked in Upernavik until 1968 . Then he returned to Qaanaaq, where he stayed until 1975. From 1975 to 1978 he was pastor in Uummannaq and then until 1984 in Ilulissat . In 1984 he replaced Jens Christian Chemnitz as Vice Bishop of Greenland. In 1993 Greenland became its own diocese and Kristian Mørch became the first bishop of Greenland. Two years later he retired and was replaced by Sofie Petersen .

In addition to his church activities, he was also the editor of local newspapers in Qaanaaq, Upernavik, Uummannaq and Ilulissat. In Ilulissat he also edited the sermon collections. In Qaanaaq and Ilulissat he was also active on the school board. He was a knight of the Dannebrog Order . Kristian Mørch died on May 3, 2017 at the age of 87.
