Jens Christian Chemnitz

Jens Christian Chemnitz (born March 31, 1935 in Qeqertarsuatsiaat , † September 17, 2005 in Denmark ) was a Greenland cleric .

Life

Jens Christian Chemnitz was the son of the pastor Jens Lars Andreas Chemnitz (1891-1966) and the nurse Ingrid Elisabeth Nielsen († 1935). His grandfather was the pastor Jens Chemnitz (1853–1929). His uncle was therefore Jørgen Chemnitz (1890-1956).

He grew up in Qeqertarsuatsiaat, Alluitsup Paa , Sisimiut and Denmark. He graduated from the Sorø Akademi in 1953 and then attended the University of Copenhagen , which he named Cand in 1961. theol. left. He was then installed as an assistant pastor in Kongens Lyngby and moved back to Greenland the following year, where he was appointed pastor of Sisimiut in 1962, which he remained until 1968. From 1969 to 1971 he was pastor of Ittoqqortoormiit . Then he returned to Denmark and became a pastor in Hårlev - Varpelev . In 1973 he was appointed Land Provost of Greenland. In 1980 the office was replaced by that of Vice Bishop and Jens Christian Chemnitz became Vice Bishop of Greenland. In 1984 he was replaced by Kristian Mørch and he became a Greenlandic pastor in Denmark. In 1995 he retired.

Jens Christian Chemnitz was an administrative member of Knud Rasmussenip Højskolia from 1962 to 1969, from 1963 as vice chairman and again from 1973 to 1979. From 1975 to 1981 he was an administrative member of Atuagagdliutit , from 1975 as vice chairman, and from 1979 to 1980 of Grønlands Landsmuseum while he was also a member of the Museum Council. From 1973 to 1984 he was an administrative member of the Getrud Rask Minde children's home in Sisimiut and from 1985 to 1986 at Forening Grønlandske Børn . In 1972 he was a member of the committee for Den Grønlandske Kirkesag , from 1973 to 1979 a member of the school board, from 1980 to 1982 chairman of the pastors training committee and from 1982 to 1983 of the catechists and organists training committee. However, from 1993 he became particularly important as the head of the working group for the new translation of the Bible into Greenlandic, which was completed under him in 2000.

On March 12, 2001, Jens Christian Chemnitz received the Nersornaat in gold. He died on September 17, 2005 in Denmark after a short illness at the age of 70.
