Jewish cemetery (Beerfelden)

The Jewish cemetery Beerfelden is a cemetery in Beerfelden , a district of Oberzent in the Odenwaldkreis in Hesse . It stands as a cultural monument under monument protection .

The Jewish cemetery, surrounded by a stone wall, is located southeast of Beerfelden directly on the L 3120 state road running from Beerfelden to Ober-Sensbach .

Until well into the 20th century, the dead of the Jewish community in Beerfelden were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Michelstadt . In 1922 the Jewish community of Beerfelden acquired land to build a cemetery. This and a cemetery hall, created according to plans by the Cologne architect Robert Stern , were inaugurated on September 6, 1928.

Numerous gravestones have been preserved in the 3478 m² cemetery, which was occupied from 1928 and where 13 burials were carried out up to the Second World War .

The cemetery hall and the Beerfeld synagogue were destroyed in 1938. In connection with the November pogrom in 1938 and in May 1994, the cemetery was desecrated . The tombstones were knocked over and partly badly damaged.
