history

The oldest grave inscription that was still legible in 1937/38 was from 1720. Today the oldest legible grave inscription is from 1725. Between 1730 and 1747 the cemetery was surrounded by a wall. In the years 1860/61 the cemetery was enlarged to the area of 7372 m². It was occupied by Jewish residents of the communities in the wider area: Beerfelden , Hetschbach , Höchst im Odenwald , Kirchbrombach , König , Mümling-Grumbach , Neustadt and Seckmauern . Jewish cemeteries were later laid out in some of these places.

time of the nationalsocialism

“In connection with the November pogrom of 1938, the burial hall of the cemetery was torn down by SA people and Hitler Youth from Michelstadt and Erbach and the tombstones were demolished. During the Second World War, the cemetery was seized by the Corps Clothing Office. The senior officers had barracks built on the cemetery property and ruthlessly shoveled away the graves, leaving skulls and skeletal parts lying around in the forest. After 1945 the cemetery was put back in order by the city administration - as far as possible. Former SS , SA and Hitler Youth members were called in, who carried out the clean-up and restoration work under the direction of the city archivist Ph. Buxbaum. The Baal Shem's grave was also restored by a great-grandson of the Baal Shem and received a new tombstone. "
