Jewish cemetery (Harzheim)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Harzheim Jewish Cemetery is located on Schwammberger Weg in Harzheim , a district of Mechernich in the Euskirchen district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The land association of the Jewish communities of North Rhine-Westphalia is the owner of the 316 m² plot.

The Jewish cemetery was already occupied before 1812. How long it was occupied cannot be determined as there are no more tombstones ( mazewot ). In 1922 there were still remains of the surrounding wall. For many years the cemetery area was used for agriculture and as a garbage dump. In 1982 the cemetery was "rediscovered" and repaired as part of a land consolidation. Since then it has been designated and maintained by the city of Mechernich as a Jewish cemetery. On November 4, 2002 it was placed under monument protection. In spring 2014, the city of Mechernich set up information boards at all Jewish cemeteries in the city area (Mechernich, Bleibuir, Harzheim and Kommern).
