history

The first documentary evidence of Jewish life in Herstelle was the Jew Moyses in 1652. The highest number of Jewish community members, 40 people, is recorded for the year 1843. A separate synagogue community was set up in Herstelle in 1853/54. A prayer room had existed in a private house since the 18th century, and in 1860 the community acquired a house and used it as a synagogue. Due to emigration, the number of parishioners steadily decreased, the synagogue was given up before 1900. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Jewish manufacturers belonged to the Beverungen synagogue community. On September 1, 1939, six Jews were still living in Herstelle. The Frankenbergs were deported to Riga in 1942 and murdered there in 1944, Ida Wichelhausen also died in Theresienstadt in 1944 . Her two sons escaped deportation by emigrating. The widow Kohlberg died in Herstelle in 1942. She was buried secretly in the Jewish cemetery and was only given a tombstone after the war.

The cemetery has existed since at least 1750. 25 graves are still preserved on the stepped area on the hillside. The cemetery is owned by the regional association of the Jewish communities of Westphalia-Lippe .
