Jewish cemetery (Höxter)
The Höxter Jewish cemetery is located in the town of Höxter in the Höxter district in North Rhine-Westphalia . As a Jewish cemetery , it is an architectural monument .
In the cemetery on Gartenstrasse (between the streets “An der Petrischule” and “Papenbrink”) 18 gravestones have been preserved. In addition, there are fragments of over 100 stones in two memorials that were erected from the remains of the gravestone after 1945. The memorials are in the cemetery to the left of Mittelweg. Some of the inscriptions on the fragments are still legible.
history
The cemetery was occupied from 1839 to 1941. It is believed that around 177 burials took place in the cemetery by 1937.
During the Nazi era , the cemetery was almost completely devastated, but not in November 1938. According to a note from the town of Höxter, the gravestones were still preserved on April 16, 1943. The destruction was initiated by the garrison commander .
Old Jewish Cemetery
There are no more gravestones in the old Jewish cemetery on the street “Hinter der Mauer”, accessible via Corbiestraße. This cemetery was already occupied from before 1618 until the beginning of the 19th century.
