history

The oldest written mention of Jewish life in Vörden comes from the year 1623/24. In 1700 a mention was made of a Joseph Nathan who was accused of having "socialized" with a Catholic widow. The Jewish cemetery in Vörden was probably laid out in the early 18th century. It was also used by the Jews from Bredenborn . The oldest surviving tombstone dates from 1824. Between 1933 and 1938, about 21 Jews lived in Vörden who either emigrated or were deported during the war years . After the war , only the brothers Karl Siegbert and Ernst Israelsohn from the Stutthof concentration camp returned to their homeland and converted to Christianity. The cemetery is not known to have been devastated during the Nazi era. The last burial - Hugo Kleinstraß from Bredenborn - took place in 1957. 33 grave sites are still preserved today. In 1963, the Israelsohn family had a memorial stone placed in the cemetery for their family.
