history

The first written mention of Jewish life in Löwendorf was in 1720 by Jacob Wolff (Wulff). In 1785 the Jewish community consisted of six families. In the middle of the 19th century, the Löwendorf Jews belonged to the Fürstenau synagogue community , but maintained a prayer room on the main street in Löwendorf. The burial of a Löwendorf Jew in Fürstenau is also documented for the year 1826.

The construction of the Jewish cemetery in Löwendorf is estimated to be in the late 18th century; the grounds were made available by the judge Wolff von Metternich . Since the Jewish community could not raise any money for the remeasurement, it was not fenced in and devastated around 1880 by the pigs of the Löwendorfer shepherd. The last person to be buried here was Joseph Desenberg in 1884. Many gravestones were knocked over and destroyed during the Nazi era . After the Second World War , the eight preserved tombstones were rearranged.
