history
The "new" cemetery, created around 1800, was an association cemetery for the Jewish communities in Otterberg , Mehlingen, Sembach , Frankenstein and Kaiserslautern . Most of the tombstones date from the 19th century.
During the Nazi era and before that, the cemetery was desecrated several times . Eventually it was almost completely destroyed, but then restored. It was later severely damaged again during maneuvers on the former training site. In the meantime, however, the community has restored it and surrounded it with a fence.
There are no more gravestones from the old Jewish cemetery , which was probably built around the middle of the 18th century in the “Obere Kinkel” area. This cemetery was leveled when the US military airfield was built.
