Michael Tilly

Michael Tilly (born November 16, 1963 in Berlin ) is a German theologian. He is professor of the New Testament and Ancient Judaism at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen , director of the Institute for Ancient Judaism and Hellenistic Religious History, and author of specialist books, essays and lexicon articles on Judaic and biblical subjects.

Career

Tilly studied Protestant theology in Mainz and Heidelberg from 1982 to 1989 , became active in the SS 1983 in the VDSt Königsberg-Mainz , received his doctorate in 1993 in the New Testament in Mainz and worked from 1991 to 1997 as a research assistant, then until 2001 as a research assistant there Seminar for Jewish Studies . In 2001 he obtained his habilitation (subject: Jewish studies). He then taught in 2001/2002 at the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education and at the Koblenz-Landau University in Koblenz.

From 2002 to 2012 he was a university lecturer at the Jewish Studies Seminar in Mainz. In 2002 he taught at the Theological Faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena , in 2003 at the Protestant Theology Department of the Saarland University in Saarbrücken , 2005/2006 at the Church University of Wuppertal , 2006/2007 and 2012 in the Jerusalem Theological Year .

From 2007 to 2012 he was the professor for the New Testament and Biblical Didactics at the Institute for Protestant Theology at the University of Koblenz-Landau in Landau. In the 2004/2005 winter semester he received the “Prize for Excellent Teaching” from the Senate of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . In September 2007 he was appointed adjunct professor and in November 2009 he was ordained in the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate .

He accepted the offer of a W3 professorship for New Testament and Ancient Judaism at the Protestant theological faculty of the University of Tübingen on April 1, 2012. In June 2012 he was appointed Research Associate in the Department of New Testament Studies, University of Pretoria (South Africa) and in July 2016 he was appointed a full member of the Palatinate Society for the Advancement of Science. From 2016 to 2019 he was dean of the Tübingen Evangelical Theological Faculty.

He is the editor of the Rabbinical Texts series . Since 2016 he has been a member of the editorial team of the series Scientific Monographs on the Old and New Testament and the journal Kerygma und Dogma . Since 2017 he has been co-editor of the review magazine Theologische Rundschau and has been responsible for New Testament science and its sub-disciplines. Since August 2018 he has been a member of the Minerva Fellowship Committee of the Max Planck Society .

His academic research and publications focus on the literature and religion of ancient Judaism, the Septuagint , the Tosefta , the interpretation and transmission of the Holy Scriptures in ancient Judaism and early Christianity, as well as hostility towards Jews and anti-Semitism in the past and present.
