The Schnaittach Jewish Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in Schnaittach , a market in the central Franconian district of Nürnberger Land . The cemetery consists of three spatially separated parts, as space for new grave sites had to be created again and again over the centuries.

history

Cemetery I.

This first cemetery, located on today's Krankenhausweg, was laid out around 1500. It was first mentioned in a document in 1537 and has an area of ​​48.0 acres .

Cemetery II

The purchase contract for the field between Krankenhausweg and Erlanger Strasse was drawn up on February 16, 1834. The cemetery has an area of ​​20.4 acres.

Cemetery III

1897 of the removed old was with some of the stones Taharahauses built on the latest installment of a new Taharahaus, which still exists today. The first burial in the 19.2 ares large cemetery took place on April 5, 1907 (Regina Aischberg).

The dead of the following Jewish communities were also buried in Schnaittach : Forth , Hüttenbach and Ottensoos . Until 1607 the Jewish community of Fürth also buried its dead in Schnaittach.

During the National Socialist era , all of the tombstones in Cemetery II were desecrated and sold as building material . A large part of the tombstones was also removed from cemetery I and a further part from cemetery III until the cemeteries were placed under monument protection. Other tombstones were damaged.

Current condition

Today a total of around 180 tombstones are still preserved. Many tombstones have been preserved on the older part of cemetery I, but only one tombstone in the original place in cemetery II. In the meantime, however, some gravestones have been returned there in part or as a whole, but could not be re-erected in their original location. The last burials at Cemetery III were those of Chajim Strauss on June 27, 1938 and those of Heinrich Freimann, who died on January 16, 1952 in Schnaittach.

In 1993 a memorial stone for the victims of the Shoah was erected at Cemetery II .
