The 43.3 ares large cemetery is located on the south-eastern outskirts of Ermetzhofen.

history

The cemetery was laid out in 1564 and expanded in 1777. The cemetery was an association cemetery for deceased Jews from the Jewish communities of Burgbernheim , Ermetzhofen, Gnodstadt , Uffenheim and Welbhausen .

In 1926 the cemetery was desecrated; Furthermore, gravestones were used to build a road to Obermühl during the Nazi era . In 1959 the cemetery was restored as best it could.

There are still around 400 tombstones left in the cemetery. The two oldest stones are from 1791 and 1794, the youngest from 1936. Contrary to the Jewish tradition, which provides for a simple tombstone design, most of the tombs are in the neoclassical and neo-Gothic style.
