Jürgen Apel (* 20th June 1937 in Hannover ) is an award-winning German cycling - functionary , organizer of the velodrome Hannover and former racing cyclist .

Career

Jürgen Apel was born in Hanover shortly before the Second World War . As a child, at the age of 13 in 1951, he joined the then RC Wanderslust and worked there for several years as a racing driver before starting his sporting career as an amateur at RC Blau-Gelb Hanover , later RC Blau-Gelb Langenhagen , in order to run his own toy shop for more than three decades until 1995.

Despite his activity as an entrepreneur, Apel remained loyal to cycling, taking on the honorary role of treasurer at RV Grün-Weiß Hannover around 1963 at the age of 26 . He was also instrumental in organizing two world championships in cyclo-cross races for amateurs and professionals as well as in numerous German championships and countless cycling events in the Hanover district .

In addition, Apel held the office of treasurer for the Hanover Radrennbahn for the first time from 1967 to 1969, and was again active as such in 1999. Since then, Jürgen Apel has been in charge of renovating the wooden pavement of the traditional cycle racing track in the Hanover district of Wülfel , until the sports operations were to be given up in 2006. But Apel campaigned for the preservation of the venue and, together with the racetrack designer and builder Walter von Lütken, expertly renovated the substructure of the wooden racetrack: The two of them painstakingly cleaned the driving surface with a steam jet and replaced 2.5 km of wooden slats, so that the sports business could be continued.

Not least because of Apel's commitment, the 2014 German Derny Championship was revived in Wülfel after a break of 14 years . In addition to national championships, the 2015 Derny European Championship was held there, which - measured by "the starting nations and participants - [...] was the most successful in history". On August 18 and 19, 2016, it was Apel who organized the European Championship in Hanover.
