Jürgen Höritzsch (* 1958 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a German painter and graphic artist.

biography

The trained computer scientist Höritzsch undertook his first artistic attempts in the field of photography, which were soon expanded to include visual experiments with photo montage and collage. Because of the unconventional way of representation for GDR conditions, conflicts with state organs soon arose. The already limited possibilities for the publication of works were further reduced. Nevertheless, Höritzsch managed to show some of his photomontages at international exhibitions (France, Finland, USSR). Within the GDR he was only able to publish his work within the framework of a few editions that were independent of the state art business. Mention should be made here: "A3", "Entwerter / Oder" and "Der Hase" (here he is one of the editors). An application to study photography at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig is rejected at the instigation of the organs of the Ministry for State Security . The occupation with conventional graphic techniques ( etching , screen printing ) and drawing now increasingly took up more space in Höritzsch's artistic work. With the resulting work, he succeeded in being accepted as an autodidact in the GDR 's state artists' association in the mid-1980s . Höritzsch now also turns to painting, no further photographic work was created.

In 1994 Höritzsch received a working grant from the Kulturfonds der neue Bundesländer foundation and, in 1997, a work stay in the artist house in the castle garden in Cuxhaven .

At the beginning of the nineties, new materials were experimentally examined for their suitability as a graphic or painting medium. As a result, Höritzsch developed a process that he called laminage painting. With the help of Indian ink and gum arabic, graphic motifs are created on Japanese paper , which are then applied to canvas and sealed with shellac of different tones. This is followed by a revision with oil paints. The resulting pictures draw their charm from the synthesis of graphic elements and colorful painting. The image content is predominantly located in the realistic or surrealist area, whereby mostly references to the world of images of the mass media can be made. In parallel with painting, from 2006 printmaking gained in importance again, with etching in particular serving as a field of experimentation for new modes of expression.

Höritzsch lives and works in Chemnitz, where he is also represented in public spaces ( Wolfsspiel ).
