Jürgen Heideking

Jürgen Heideking (born April 17, 1947 in Hameln , † March 10, 2000 in Brühl ) was a German historian .

Jürgen Heideking attended the Schiller-Gymnasium Hameln and passed the Abitur there in 1966. He studied from 1968 to 1974 at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and from 1970 to 1971 in Paris at the Sorbonne . He received his doctorate from Gerhard Schulz in Tübingen in 1978 . He completed his habilitation in Tübingen in 1987 after a lengthy research stay as a Feodor Lynen scholarship holder at the University of Wisconsin with a fundamental work on the political culture of the early American republic: The Constitution at the Judgment Seat. History and ratification of the American Constitution 1787–1791. For this he was awarded the Schurman Prize of the University of Heidelberg in 1997.

From 1988 to 1990 Heideking was a research fellow at the German Historical Institute in Washington, DC. In 1990 he took over a chair for North American history in Tübingen. In 1992 he succeeded Erich Angermann as Professor of Modern and Contemporary History and Director of the Institute for Anglo-American History at the University of Cologne , where he taught until his death in spring 2000. His successor was Norbert Finzsch . Heideking was killed in a car accident.

Heideking was one of the leading German USA historians who published over twenty books as an author and editor. His academic interests focused on American history from the 18th to the 20th centuries, international contemporary history, the history of the secret services, and German-American educational history.
