Gerhard Schulz (historian)

Gerhard Schulz (born August 24, 1924 in Sommerfeld , † April 14, 2004 in Tübingen ) was a German historian .

Life

Gerhard Schulz was the son of a civil servant and studied in Leipzig after the Second World War . At the end of the 1940s, he moved to the Free University of Berlin and did his doctorate under Hans Herzfeld on the SPD before the First World War . He then worked as a historian on the Weimar Republic and National Socialism .

In 1962 Schulz accepted a position at the University of Tübingen and in the same year his habilitation thesis Between Democracy and Dictatorship was published . Volume I: Constitutional Policy and Imperial Reform in the Weimar Republic . From 1963 to 1990 he was director of the Tübingen seminar for contemporary history. He was co-editor of Bracher / Schulz / Sauer , a standard work on the National Socialist " seizure of power ", which was first published in 1960 at the Institute for Political Science in West Berlin. Gerhard Schulz was responsible for the second part: The beginnings of the totalitarian state of measures .

Schulz's wife was the daughter of the Prussian finance minister and resistance fighter Johannes Popitz , who was executed in February 1945.
